E-course: Comprehensive nursing management of erectile dysfunction

This e-course will guide you through the aetiology of erectile dysfunction in men.

We will discuss pathophysiology, psychological support, biomedical treatments and practical clinical application of ED treatments for specialist nurses.

The e-course is divided into 3 parts and will cover:

  • A general overview of erectile dysfunction including, prevalence, pathophysiology and basic management.
  • Practical and technical application of biomedical management.
  • Applying skills into practice through case study discussions.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the common causes, pathophysiology, and psychological impact of erectile dysfunction (ED).
  • Identify key components of the assessment process, including history taking, validated questionnaires, and referral pathways.
  • Demonstrate correct use of first-line management options, including oral medications, vacuum erection devices (VEDs), and intracavernosal therapies using models.
  • Understand the indications for advanced treatment options such as penile implants, and the nurse’s role in pre- and post-operative care.
  • Provide person-centred education and counselling for patients and their partners, addressing sensitive topics and promoting sexual well-being.
  • Recognise when to refer patients for psychological or psychosexual support, and be familiar with available local and national services.
  • Apply evidence-based clinical judgement in managing ED in special populations (e.g., post-prostatectomy, diabetic, cardiovascular).
  • Reflect on personal communication styles and attitudes when discussing sexual health, and develop strategies for supportive patient engagement.
